What is a tuck box?

How a tuck box closes, the parts of a tuck flap and where tuck boxes are used.

A tuck box is a folding carton that closes with a tuck flap: a flap with a rounded edge that slides inside the box and is held by friction. It is printed and cut as one flat piece of board (the blank), glued once along the side seam, shipped flat and folded into shape by hand.

The parts

  • Body panels: front, back and two sides, joined by a glued side seam.
  • Lid and tuck flap: the lid covers the opening; the tuck flap on its edge slides inside.
  • Dust flaps: small flaps on the side panels that fold in under the lid, square the box and keep dust out.
  • Locks: small slits or a friction edge (slit lock) stop the flap popping open; a cherry lock holds better on heavier cartons.

Where they are used

Almost every small retail product: cosmetics, perfume, candles, soap, supplements, tea, playing cards, chargers, spark plugs. The same closure also appears on corrugated mailers, where the lid tucks into the front wall.

Tuck top, different bottoms

The top of the carton nearly always tucks. The bottom can tuck too (straight or reverse tuck end), lock by hand (snap lock), pop open pre-glued (auto bottom) or be glued shut (seal end). See every style.
